It's another year for the books (and book bags)

By North St. Bags

We’re thrilled to finish out our 14th year of making handcrafted, durable bike bags and gear. 2023 brought a lot of exciting changes, challenges and triumphs for this bag making team. We thought we’d pause and take a moment to look back at the journey.

North Street Comes to North Portland

North St Bags Factory Store

Back in March we moved from our former location on SE Poplar Ave up to North Portland-- fitting, right? The new space has fit our needs perfectly. After the big moving day (and post-pizza nap time) we settled right in and resumed our production efforts within just a few days.

We’ve been loving the space, the extra daylight and our new location along the N Williams / N Vancouver bike route. Any type of move is a challenge. Ours was certainly no exception, but we have been thrilled to settle into our new digs on N Flint Ave.

Come by and see us! We opened a brand new storefront just off of our sewing department. We’d love to chat about a custom project, show our selection of stock bags, or just say hey!

We’re open weekdays 1-5pm (closed weekends and holidays)

Turning Trash Into Durable Gear

North St Bags Upcycled Banner

Perhaps the most fulfilling project we took on this year was transforming material that was bound for the landfill into durable bags.

North St. first started working with upcycled materials in 2020 to use the odd bits of fabric and leftovers from pattern cutting, reducing waste. We’ve been selling these one-of-a-kind weirdo bags ever since! Then in 2022, we launched a larger limited-edition upcycled collection of packs and panniers, made from the donated Life Time Events and SRAM materials. We spent the last year processing just under 1 ton of material into usable fabric for bags. We still have stock on a few select items, grab them while you still can!

Check out our blog post from back in July for the full story.

From the Fans

As always, the best part of what we do is connecting with our fans, our customers and well, you! We’ve heard stories of our bags being used for fire rescue crews, dog walking, weeks long international bike adventures, backcountry ski trips, and much much more! Here are some kind words from some of our fans.

“You need this bag. I was looking for a bag that was comfortable as a backpack in addition to working successfully as a pannier and this bag delivers!” Rachel G. (Woodward Backpack Pannier)

“Where have you been all of my bike commuting life?” Nicole H. (Belmont Backpack)

“Quick shipment and great company to purchase from! Good gift ideas for a loved one, or for yourself since their bags are durable and made to last a long time. “ Elizabeth P. (Belmont Backpack)

“The pannier is everything that was stated, and everything that I needed. This is also legacy product, meaning that it will be with me through a lifetime!” Micheal D. (Venture Pannier 30L)

“This tote exceeds my expectations. Everything from the zipper inside pocket to size is perfect. I bought it to be easier to carry library books, and will now purchase a second one for grocery shopping. A great find!” Elizabeth M. (Tabor Tote)

Perfectly designed little bag for edc basics: keys, phone, chunky sunglass case, lipgloss and mints. I have the Pioneer 9, as well, which holds more and is better suited for travel and longer hikes. I am very pleased to have both sizes because they are perfect for different things. “
Katherine V. (Pioneer 8 Hip Pack)

“Love my new pannier so much I went and bought a second backpack style one almost immediately. Looking forward to building up a nice collection of North St, earned yourself a new fan.” Jesse B.  (Venture Pannier 30L)

“I bought this sturdy bag because it's the right size and strength to carry my clutch of library books back and forth and it fits comfortably on my shoulder + has a wipe-clean liner on the inside + a zipper pouch for valuables” Susan H.  (Tabor Tote)

Super sweet tool roll for my go to bike kit. Great material and quality. Nice selection of color.” Endre D.  (Tool Roll)

“Very serviceable sling bag/ hip pack. I am a big guy with broad shoulders and a deep chest. This bag fits very well, even over my winter coat. Quality build and materials. Organization is incredible. Very pleased with my purchase.” Joshua T (Pioneer 12 Hip Pack)

Grocery getting just got easier. The accessory shoulder strap is a great addition to make this panier super functional off the bike at the farmers market or in the grocery store.” Drew H. (Macro Pannier 21L)
